ABOUT VERDENSBALLETTEN
Verdensballetten with Denmark as the backdrop
With the desire to move ballet and classical music out of the dark theater halls, Verdensballetten moves tutu, toe tip dancing and classical pas de deux out into the Danish summer every summer.
Since the first performance in 2008, when the stage was set in the raw nature at The Sand-Covered Church in Skagen, Verdensballetten now performs in many spectacular locations throughout Denmark, where you have never before experienced ballet and opera at this high international level.
Choose your favorite location, whether the backdrop is the roar of the sea, beautiful castles, raw prison walls, open city squares and iconic landmarks, and enjoy everything in the open air. The interplay of wind and weather, art and nature as a backdrop creates a whole new ballet experience with the soul and character of each location.
Fully cast gala performance
This year’s performance features smaller excerpts from the diverse world of ballet.
Artistic Director Steven McRae of The Royal Ballet of London puts it this way:
“We want guests to experience the show like a box of delicate chocolates – all with different flavors that leave you wanting more”
Look forward to experiencing a performance that is a carefully composed gala with classical ballet, modern dance, and brand new choreographies created especially for Verdensballetten. In addition, the program includes well-known arias and scenes from the world of opera and catchy classical music for violin and piano.
Emcee and soloist Jens-Christian gives an entertaining introduction to the evening’s works and contributors with facts and wonderful anecdotes, so you get the full experience.
World stars close to you
The participating ballet stars come from Europe’s leading ballet companies such as The Royal Ballet of London, Staatsballett Berlin, English National Ballet and Hamburg Ballett. Verdensballetten naturally also presents some of Denmark’s most talented solo dancers from the Royal Danish Theater.
All are charismatic and acclaimed ballet dancers of the highest international level, inspired by the unique concept of the World Ballet, where dancing in a unique setting brings them close to the audience in the bright summer evening.
Despite the challenges of performing outdoors, the artists welcome unexpected obstacles such as sun in their eyes, sand in their costumes, and strong crosswinds – all elements that create living art that emerges in the moment – even stronger and more moving.
“The special thing about Verdensballetten is all the unique venues that have their own energy. We can see the audience and the whole experience becomes much more intimate and special.”
Reece Clarke, principal dancer at The Royal Ballet, London.
Experience Verdensballetten all year round
At Verdensballetten we are passionate about presenting current and interesting ballet experiences all year round, and therefore invite you to a new format we call Balletsalon, where we let the audience get even closer.
In Rungstedlund’s beautiful living rooms, we invited Jens-Christian Wandt and Danish ballerina Astrid Elbo to talk about her character work as Karen Blixen in the performance Blixen på Det Kgl. Theater and the preparations for her debut in Swan Lake at the same venue.
A format we repeated in spring 2024 in connection with the Danish premiere of the documentary A Resilient Man about Steven McRae and his fight back after his serious injury.

The artists are always announced in the spring before the first ballet performance of the summer, but as an example, here are some of our former dancers, musicians and singers:
